Prototype manufacturing Ogle broadens machining capabilities with Hurco

Complex prototypes and small batches are driving demand for more flexible machining at Ogle Models and Prototypes. Its first 5-axis machining centre enables production with fewer setups, while an expanded toolchanger supports longer periods of unattended operation.

Ogle Models and Prototypes has installed its first 5-axis machining centre at its Letchworth facility, expanding its capacity to produce large, complex components with fewer setups.

The prototyping, rapid manufacturing and industrial model-making specialist selected a Hurco VMX42SRTi with a B-axis spindle head and flush rotary table. The machine has a 60-station toolchanger, introduced at MACH 2026, instead of the standard 40-station version. The additional capacity is intended to support longer periods of unattended production and could accommodate future robotic automation.

The investment increases the size and complexity of parts Ogle can machine while fitting within a compact footprint. The SRTi configuration also allows the machine to operate as a 3- or 4-axis machining centre using its full working envelope when 5-axis machining is not required.

The machine’s specification includes a 12,000 rpm, 36.5 kW motor spindle with an integrated chiller, 20 bar through-spindle coolant, direct drives on the B and C rotary axes, and linear scales on the X, Y and Z axes.

The installation extends Ogle’s relationship with Hurco, which began in 2017 with the purchase of a VM30i 3-axis machining centre. The company subsequently added two further Hurco machines, including an extended-travel VMX42Ti. Ogle uses the supplier’s Winmax control system to programme one-off components and small production batches.

Founded in 1954, Ogle supplies models, prototypes and functional parts to customers in product design, film, architecture, aerospace, defence, medical and automotive applications. Its manufacturing capabilities include CNC machining, 3D printing, vacuum casting, industrial model-making and finishing. Alongside machining, the company uses additive processes including stereolithography and powder bed fusion.
