Lead-free aluminium is moving into high-precision applications where chip control, surface quality and process stability are critical. In a joint machining demonstration with Tornos France, Eural Gnutti’s alloy 2033 showed how the material can support demanding turning operations while opening new options for sectors such as luxury goods and watchmaking.

For Tornos France, precision turning starts with material behaviour. Eural Gnutti’s lead-free aluminium alloy 2033 is designed to meet the demands of high-speed machining, where machinability, chip control and tight tolerances are decisive. According to Eural Gnutti, the material enables stable processes, more efficient operational management and consistently reliable performance.
Tornos France, a subsidiary of the Swiss Tornos Group, is a long-established machine tool manufacturer specializing in bar turning, particularly with Swiss-type automatic lathes. With more than 140 years of experience and a presence in over 20 countries, the group has thousands of installations worldwide in high-precision sectors such as the automotive, medical and luxury industries. Thanks to its current machine portfolio, Tornos is now a leading technology partner for complex, high value-added applications.

The synergy between Eural and Tornos is a sign of the industry’s growing interest in lead-free aluminium solutions that combine high performance with stable and reliable machining processes. These benefits are complemented by surface quality, which is particularly important for this sector, where high aesthetic standards must be maintained consistently over the long term. In this context, the material’s ability to deliver bright and homogeneous surfaces, ideally suited as a basis for subsequent treatments and coatings with precious metals such as gold, silver or palladium, is a key factor in further enhancing the quality and aesthetic level of the final product.
New perspectives for the luxury and watchmaking industries
In the luxury and watchmaking sector, which has traditionally been associated with the use of other alloys such as leaded brass, the need to use more sustainable materials is becoming increasingly important — in response to regulatory, environmental and safety requirements relating to skin contact. In this scenario, lead-free aluminium presents itself as a concrete alternative that combines technical performance, lightness and greater sustainability while maintaining quality standards.
At the heart of the project is Eural 2033 alloy, which features excellent machinability in terms of chip formation — a decisive factor in automated machining and at the same time the greatest operational challenge. These advantages are complemented by the assurance of greater operational continuity, resulting in reduced tool breakage or wear. Alloy 2033 is therefore a solution that anticipates market developments and represents the ideal choice for the most demanding market segments.
Practical application, concrete results
On the occasion of Simodec, Tornos operated its Swiss XT turning machine live to produce a practical, lightweight and durable object that showcased the potential of both the machine tool and the material used. The choice fell on a pocket knife, where functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand, highlighting not only machining performance but also the final result in terms of surface quality and material yield — aspects that are becoming increasingly important in the respective sectors of the two companies.
The product, designed from the outset according to a “full-metal” concept, succeeded in showcasing the alloy’s properties to the fullest extent, without heterogeneous materials compromising the performance demonstration. Unlike the most common designs, which include inserts or components made of plastic or wood, every element was made exclusively of metal: the handle from alloy 2033, the blade and ring from stainless steel and the screw from titanium.
Specifically, the handle was machined by turning, milling, drilling and thread cutting, followed by a finishing process through tumbling, which produced a particularly bright surface. The use of tools for steel, combined with an increased cutting speed, also contributed to improved chip evacuation. The results demonstrated high machinability and production continuity, as well as outstanding surface quality. Added to this are the solid mechanical strength of the final product, including impact resistance, and its full compatibility with surface treatments such as anodizing and decorative finishes.
