At AMB, SMW-Autoblok and SMW-electronics will demonstrate the flexibility that digitalised and automatable workholding technology can offer for both high-volume and small-batch production.

SMW-Autoblok and SMW-electronics will present clamping systems, gripping systems and inductive coupling systems for reducing setup times in metalworking at AMB in Stuttgart from 15 to 19 September 2026. The developments are aimed at both large companies with fully automated series production and SMEs seeking to adapt their manufacturing operations in response to skills shortages and competitive pressure.

Rotary machining: power chuck for automatic jaw changes

One of the highlights in the chuck segment is the KNCS-matic-2G. The latest version of the power chuck for rotary applications has been further optimised for use with robots. An industrial robot can now perform automatic, rapid jaw changes using a simplified release mechanism, further reducing setup times. A wide range of accessories allows the KNCS-matic-2G to be adapted to specific machining requirements, including the digital e-sensing workpiece stop.

Stationary workholding systems: hydraulics meets digitalisation

SMW also offers different routes into automation for stationary workholding systems. The company will exhibit the SLX digit long-stroke clamping system and its SLX digit 230 compact power-clamping variant. Both combine conventional hydraulics with digital functions.

An integrated position-measuring system allows the opening stroke to be adjusted continuously to suit each component. The jaws can also be changed automatically by a robot. For production processes with a higher degree of automation, SMW will present the mechatronic SLX e-motion 520 and SLX e-motion 335 compact models in Stuttgart. Both the jaw position and clamping force can be adjusted continuously. Integrated into the machine control via Profinet or EtherNet/IP, the systems can support unattended production throughout complete shifts.

Inductive coupling systems for real-time communication

Visitors to AMB will also be able to see the latest generation of SMW inductive coupling systems in operation. The C80 Giga enables contactless, real-time communication between actuators and sensors and the higher-level control system.

It transmits signals wirelessly across an air gap of up to 3 mm at either 100 Mbit/s via Fast Ethernet or 1 Gbit/s via fully transparent Gigabit Ethernet. According to SMW, the transmission operates without perceptible delay, supporting more precise data transfer as well as greater process reliability and productivity.

The C80 Giga also supplies up to 75 W of power at 24 V. SMW developed the system for automating rotary applications and changeover processes. Its high transmission rates also make it suitable for complex camera applications.
