Over the past five years, China has gone from being a country with a marginal presence in additive manufacturing to one of the world's leading nations in this industry, according to a recent analysis by the "3D Media Printing Network". Dozens of Chinese companies are producing hardware and increasingly exporting it as well. Hundreds of Chinese companies are now using additive manufacturing for prototyping, tooling and actual production of parts.

A widespread stereotype in this context, the trade portal continues, is that Chinese 3D printing companies are not innovative. They merely copy and then bring prices down by scaling up. This may have been true once. It is no longer true today.
