Patented solutions for rubber processing

For the rubber industry, Rodolfo Comerio offers calendering technologies used in applications ranging from car and truck tyres to conveyor belts, offshore hoses, gaskets, air springs, technical fabrics and aerospace components.

Among the key innovations are unwinding units with automatic threading and joining of fabric and rubber strips. The patented system feeds the new fabric head and inserts the rubber strip into the press without manual intervention. According to the company, this can reduce reel change time by 70 percent, waste during joining by 80 percent and manpower requirements by 70 percent, while improving safety and reducing pre-calender storage needs.

Another development is the RC SF-Free friction-free laminating system, designed to optimise the incorporation of steel and fabric into rubber. The low-friction sliding mechanism with adjustable pressure is intended to improve rubber penetration, thickness accuracy and cord distribution. In tyre production, this can support lower rolling resistance, better mechanical stability and reduced raw material use.

Rodolfo Comerio will also highlight systems for fast end-count roll changes and rapid switching between textile cord and steel cord production. These technologies are designed to reduce changeover times, machine downtime and staffing requirements while increasing productivity.

Further automation solutions include advanced cutting and winding systems, automatic threading for winders and compatibility with AGV and RGV handling systems. These developments are aimed at reducing downtime, improving ergonomics and limiting human error in highly automated tyre and rubber production lines.

Modular calendering lines reduce installation time

A further focus will be the company’s new modular calendering lines. The modular concept is designed to simplify installation and commissioning: machines are pre-wired, equipped with independent electrical panels and interconnected at the factory. According to Rodolfo Comerio, this approach can reduce installation time by 60 percent and commissioning time by 50 percent, while improving safety during assembly.

Complete lines for PVC and plastics

In the plastics sector, Rodolfo Comerio supplies complete calendering lines for PVC and technical films, covering the process from calendering and cooling to thickness control, temperature control units and final winding. The company positions its single-vendor approach as a way to reduce integration risks and provide customers with one point of responsibility for the complete line.

For SPC and LVT resilient flooring, Rodolfo Comerio has developed an integrated turnkey solution in collaboration with extruder specialist ICMA San Giorgio. The line is designed for vinyl and polypropylene flooring with a high content of inorganic fillers and uses patented technology fed directly from a co-rotating twin-screw extruder without a flat die. According to the company, this enables improved surface quality, higher processing speeds and efficient waste management.

A key feature is the patented EIR embossing-in-register process, which enables in-line embossing of the decorative layer in register with the printed pattern. The system also includes gravimetric dosing, modular air ovens, water stabilisation and the recovery and reintroduction of edge trimmings into the process.

New calendering technology center

Rodolfo Comerio will also present its new Calendering Technology Center, an R&D hub for testing new calendering applications, including alternative polymers. The center supports customers from laboratory trials through to industrial-scale production concepts.

It includes two calendering lines. Tech Lab 1 is dedicated to resilient SPC and LVT flooring and replicates industrial production conditions. Tech Lab 2 is a versatile calender fed by an ICMA co-rotating twin-screw extruder and can be used for films, elastomers and thermoplastic resins. Applications include furniture, packaging, membranes, conveyor belts, tyres, natural rubber, adhesives and silicone rubbers.

The technology center follows a structured development process, from confidentiality agreements and feasibility tests to raw material validation and repeatable data collection. The aim is to turn early-stage development projects into reliable technical offers for industrial production lines.

Digital monitoring with Tielemetry

In the field of digitalisation and sustainability, Rodolfo Comerio will present Tielemetry, developed in collaboration with TIE. The digital service monitors production lines in real time, collecting data from sensors and PLCs through common industrial communication protocols.

The system supports energy and CO₂ monitoring, quality control, predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and automatic alerts. It can monitor multiple production lines, including remote facilities, through a cloud-based architecture with encrypted communication and AI-based process analysis.

Rodolfo Comerio will exhibit at Plast 2026 in Milan from 9 to 12 June 2026, hall 11, stand B31.
