Supplying injection moulding machines with plastic granulate from bags is particularly cumbersome when many machines have to be supplied with many different types of plastic, Wittmann says. Time and the personnel needed for this are often in short supply. It therefore makes sense to automate granulate handling as far as possible. With its new bag emptying station, Wittmann is now applying this improvement lever at the very start of the automation process: the emptying of granulate bags. The bags are automatically depalletised, opened, emptied and disposed of. The new Wittmann station for emptying granulate bags is offered in its standard version with two pallet spaces and a linear robot. The new system is also expected to be available on the German market soon.

Automatic bag emptying via robot

Thanks to its modular design, the size of the system can be adapted precisely to the processor’s requirements and the conditions at the installation site. Flexibility is maintained even during operation, as the robot detects the position of the bags on the pallet. This means that even partially used pallets can be depalletised efficiently and safely.

The robot picks up one raw material bag after another. The current bag is opened automatically and the granulate is filled into the container provided until the specified target quantity is reached. Empty bags are deposited separately so that they can be recycled. As an option, a grinder can be integrated into the bag emptying station to shred the emptied bags directly on site.

Like all Wittmann automation solutions, the new automatic bag emptying station is equipped with a full R9 control system, enabling intuitive operation. The R9 also makes integration into the existing IT infrastructure and into systems with other Wittmann components particularly convenient, the Kottingbrunn-based company adds.
