8. Compulsion to automate with batch size 1

Machines and systems in tool and mould making are usually designed for maximum precision. Their investment costs are correspondingly high. To achieve competitive hourly rates here, the machine spindles actually have to produce chips around the clock. That makes the result of a study by the industry initiative Marktspiegel Werkzeugbau eG all the more shocking: the average machine running time in the German-speaking industry is just 2000 spindle hours per year (8760 are theoretically possible!). If you want to remain competitive, you have to work on this figure.
This can only be achieved with coherent, holistic automation concepts for batch size 1, which include the entire value chain in the company. Digitisation, standardisation and appropriately aligned process chains play a key role here. Importantly, however, the course must be set correctly right at the beginning of a corresponding path. In many cases it therefore makes sense to examine one’s own processes together with partners who are experienced in automation.
