While the tool and mould making clusters in Portugal and Turkey, for example, are much further along in terms of networking and cooperation, many tool and mould makers in German-speaking countries often still view their domestic market competitors with suspicion. But the real competition has long been located somewhere else.

It is high time that the industry in Germany became better at networking. And there are encouraging trends in this direction: the Association of German Tool and Mould Makers (VDWF), for example, has not only grown in recent years but has also developed a basis of trust among its members, making it possible to learn from each other. Members visit each others’ companies and show very openly how they design their processes. All participants can only benefit from this fruitful exchange, which is recommended for imitation. A network only harms those who don’t belong to it.
