Cooperative manufacturing increasingly important

One very unique feature of the Portuguese mould making industry is that nearly all companies are located in the same area. There is one mould shop next to the other and you wonder how they compete and survive, each one of them. One secret is cooperation, something rarely found in other countries' mould making industries, where cooperative manufacturing will be increasingly important in future but is far from common practice yet.

In fact, Portuguese companies go far beyond the manufacture of moulds. They increasingly incorporate engineering, product design and development, prototyping, production of accessories and control devices and the production of parts and products, a situation that opens up a whole new range of business opportunities. Rui Tocha (GM of the Technological Centre for the Moulds Industry, Special Tools and Plastics, Centimfe) adds that, “In the coming years we will witness an investment in the vision of “zero defects manufacturing” associated with the digitalisation of the industry.”
