Software company Machine Works has announced the release of Machine Works 8.7, introducing significant improvements to its simulation and modelling capabilities. The highlight of the release is the first official version of Machine Works GPU, which performs geometric modelling and material removal operations on the GPU instead of the CPU, delivering substantial performance gains.

With Machine Works GPU, large 3-axis and 5-axis machining jobs can now be simulated in seconds. Speed improvements of up to 30x have been reported on high-performance GPUs, thanks to algorithms optimized for parallel processing. The GPU version uses the existing Visicut API, ensuring seamless integration for current users. Initially, GPU support is available for Nvidia GPUs on Windows, with broader platform support planned.

Other key enhancements in version 8.7 include:

  • Improved Boolean operations: New APIs enable multiple unions and subtractions in a single call, increasing efficiency through better multi-threading.
  • Profile preparation updates: Optimizations for saw-tooth shaped tools and enhanced diagnostics support improved machining accuracy.
  • Snapshot tree management: Faster pruning of large snapshot structures is now possible through targeted node marking and deletion.
  • Eccentric turning improvements: New features offer greater control over tool motion and are now supported in the Application Framework Library for easier integration.

Additional updates include enhancements to polygon slicing, more accurate collision filtering for stopped tools, and the ability to attach fixtures directly to polygonal tools — enhancing simulation detail and accuracy.

Machine Works 8.7 provides users with a more powerful, flexible, and efficient platform for machining simulation, reinforcing its role as a trusted solution in advanced manufacturing environments..
