Realising internal geometries and undercuts
The initial material for the application process is metal powder with grain sizes between 25 and 75 µm. Internal geometries and undercuts can be realised with the help of a water-soluble filling material. After the completion of the production process, it is washed out of the component, leaving the desired hollow spaces.
The MPA process can produce temperable tools and form inserts with internal coolant channels or integrated heating elements. Round components with these specifications can also be made. This technology may warrant a long look on the shop floor, but most people will never have the chance to see the machine in action. The company currently has three units in Ottobrunn and no plans to sell the technology to the public, Derntl explained. One reason is to maintain control of the technology, which took 10 years to develop.
