All metals available in powder form can be processed
With the metal powder coating application process, all metals available in powder form can be processed. There is a multiplicity of working material combinations, and the combination of metallic semi-finished products with a five-axis application strategy that enables not only cost-effective manufacture, but also post-production repair work on the component. Tempering (selective heating and cooling) is possible by introducing heating filaments and filling material. Hermle told ETMM that the build rate for tool steel is currently 4-5 cm3/min.
The company is currently using steel (1.2344/H13, 1.2367, 1.4404/316L), heavy metals (copper, bronze), as well as titanium and aluminium.
The integration of the coating/application unit into a Hermle 5-axis processing centre allows hybrid production processes in which material application and cutting are combined in one machine. The material application, in successive layers, always progresses as far as the component contours are accessible for milling. The processing of the contours is again followed by a change in the application procedure. In this way, a solid body made from two or more materials is built up. For writing the programs with alternating application and cutting paths, the MPA Studio CAD/CAM software developed specifically for the MPA process is used. It enables the layer-by-layer analysis and the machining of the component geometry necessary for building up the material. The simulation of the complete process sequence and quality assurance functions for checking the finished components make this software a flexible and versatile tool for MPA technology.
