Cecimo and its European partners have released a joint manifesto outlining a strategic vision to establish the EU as a global leader in additive manufacturing (AM). The document stresses the transformative potential of AM for digitalisation, sustainability, and industrial resilience — but also warns that Europe risks falling behind without coordinated action.

Key challenges include growing global competition, lack of AM awareness in industry leadership, technical limitations, and a shortage of skilled personnel. Despite existing EU investments, the sector needs a clear roadmap and stronger policy alignment.

To address this, the manifesto recommends:

  • A dedicated EU-wide AM strategy, similar to the Coordinated Plan on AI, to guide investments and industrial policy.
  • A European public-private AM partnership to streamline standardisation, market uptake and innovation support.
  • Emergency manufacturing capacity via distributed AM networks to enhance supply chain resilience.
  • Investment in skills development aligned with EU-funded projects such as SAM.
  • Better use of existing public funding by building on previous research and avoiding duplication.

The manifesto highlights AM’s critical role in Europe’s green and digital transitions – enabling lightweight, localised, and resource-efficient production while reducing dependence on international supply chains.

Signatories include leading industry associations from Germany (VDMA), France (Evolis), Spain (Addimat), and eight other countries. Cecimo, which represents over 1,500 European manufacturing enterprises, urges policymakers to act now to secure Europe’s competitiveness in this fast-moving field.
