The EEF feels that maintaining tariff-free access to the EU market for goods and services should be the top priority now, alongside ensuring regulatory stability, addressing the skills gap, and formulating integrated domestic policies to support investment in the manufacturing sector, competitiveness and export performance.

A trade deal that does not impose tariffs and continues to meet mutually recognised product standards is crucial, said Copley, whilst others hope for a positive outcome from Britain’s negotiations with the EU.

“We will never know now whether we were better off being in or out but UK manufacturing still makes very good, high-quality products,” said Vero Software’s Lee. “The EU might need the UK more than the UK needs the EU, and I am confident that the UK government will negotiate a favourable set-up.” ETMM
