Grob has also already conducted internal tests in cryogenic machining and has set up a prototype machine. However, CEO Nahl says that there is currently too little specific demand from customers. “When requests increase in number, Grob will reconsider the production of a cryogenic machine. Past attempts, however, have not revealed any economic benefits gained from cryogenic machining.” Sandvik is also reserved in this respect: “Cryogenic cooling has its use in machining specific materials, but a comprehensive application is rather unlikely,” says Christoffel.

Machine tool makers have to combine all options

While users may choose from several cooling concepts, machine and tool manufacturers must provide solutions meeting these different concepts.

“The challenge for machine manufacturers is to combine all options for the user in a simple way and to offer them good value for money,” says Haas Manager Thing. “With us, customers can simply put together the various options and because all solutions are developed and manufactured by Haas Automation, the overall responsibility for the whole system is with one company.” ETMM
