In May 2023, the new Center for the Engineering of Smart Product Service Systems (Zess) was opened in Bochum, Germany. A new Lunovu rLMD system, which was recently put into operation, plays an important role there.
Lunovu develops and builds Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) machine systems for industrial applications and research and development, such as this one at Zess.

The new Center for the Engineering of Smart Product Service Systems (Zess) is an inter- and transdisciplinary research facility of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), for which a new research center has been established specifically. The goal of Zess is to develop smart production service systems across disciplines.
As one of the first equipment components, a Lunovu rLMD system was installed. This system, designed specifically for the requirements of Zess, is capable of producing 3D metal components using wire-based LMD (laser metal deposition). In addition, 3D milling can also be performed in the same machine in a seamless process chain. To realize this hybrid processing, two robots were used to independently guide the wire LMD unit and a milling spindle. In addition, special control software was developed and implemented that uses both CAD data and 3D models created by an integrated scanning system.
“The new system allows us to uniquely combine additive as well as subtractive manufacturing with a view to the requirements of Industry 4.0. The focus here is on questions of process planning and control in the sense of smart and integrated production processes. Above all, we also want to explore ways to contribute to a more sustainable industry through the smart remanufacturing or repair of high-quality components,” explains Dr. Michael Herzog, Managing Director of Zess. And Dr. Rainer Beccard, Managing Director of Lunovu adds: “The new rLMD system was tailor-made for the special requirements of the Zess research projects, but at the same time was designed with industrial applications in mind. A particular highlight is the design for wire-based LMD processes, which will play an important role in the future for reasons of economic efficiency alongside the established powder-based processes.”
