Creaform says its Handy Scan 3D metrology-grade laser scanner can now be used to record physical attributes of aircraft dents and blends on Boeing commercial airplanes.
Leading manufacturer of portable 3D measurement solutions and non-destructive testing (NDT) solutions, Creaform, has just announced that its Handy Scan 3D metrology-grade laser scanner has now been approved by Boeing to record physical attributes of aircraft dents and blends on all models of Boeing commercial airplanes.
A service letter with guidance on the use of 3D scanners for measuring dents and blends on airplanes was recently released by Boeing, which includes the application of the Smart Dent 3D solution and Creaform's flagship Handy Scan 3D scanner for use by Boeing in its quality requirements.
Jérôme Beaumont, Creaform's global NDT business manager noted: “Creaform is proud to see leaders such as Boeing turn to 3D scanning solutions for surface defect inspection.” Beaumont said the goal with Smart Dent 3D is to provide utmost accurate damage assessment to ensure that informative and safe decisions are made, while getting the aircraft off ground with minimal downtime.

•Weighing under 1kg, the hand-held scanner is a handy tool for work in hangars or outdoors. Users can easily perform 3D surface inspection on any part of the aircraft where manual use is required, including on and under aircraft wings.
In addition to complying with Boeing’s service letter, the Handy Scan 3D scanners is also listed in the Airbus Technical Equipment Manual in its Structure Repair Manual.
