In an expansion of its dimensional inspection equipment portfolio, co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) manufacturer LK Metrology, Castle Donington, UK has launched a new range of laser scanners and complementary technologies that use high-speed, industry-standard Ethernet communication. They are designed to raise the efficiency of data-intensive metrology tasks on CMMs, enhance digital production and optimise metrology across the manufacturing sector. Migration to Ethernet connectivity not only improves the interoperability of present-day quality control activities, but also paves the way for a broader suite of complementary sensor technologies in the future.

Engineered for automated dimensional inspection and 3D surface digitisation, the non-contact sensors enable manufacturers to inspect complex freeform surfaces, intricate features and delicate components far more efficiently and rapidly than is possible with traditional touch-probe measurement techniques. The newly-introduced, Ethernet-ready lineup is comprehensive, as it incorporates the LC15DX, L100NX and SLK25 line scanners as well as the XC65DX and XC65DXLS cross scanners, all of which are manufactured by LK Metrology.

To ensure seamless deployment, the same high-performance specifications as in the previous SDI (Serial Digital Interface) technology scanners has been maintained, providing customers with identical, high-accuracy measurement alongside modern data transmission capabilities. In addition to the laser scanning heads themselves, the launch includes an intelligent sensor interface controller. Available in both standard 19-inch rack-mount and desktop configurations, they enable LK to retrofit CMM laser scanners to many popular brands of CMM while retaining the original controller.

Complementing the new hardware, LK Metrology’s Focus point cloud inspection software streamlines part-to-CAD inspection by automatically comparing scanned point cloud data with nominal CAD geometry. Deviations are visualised through intuitive colour maps and detailed graphical reports, enabling fast and reliable assessment of part quality.

Precise inspection of feature locations, dimensions and geometric characteristics ensures components conform to design intent, helping to guarantee proper fit, assembly performance and product reliability, while minimising manufacturing errors and costly rework.

LK Metrology has designated Ethernet as its preferred technology moving forward, officially introducing Ethernet probe-ready configurations across its premier CMM lines, including the Altera C, S, M, SF and SL platforms, as well as the Maxima and HC90 series. Installation of the scanners is supported by a new selection of probe integration kits and clear controller labelling to confirm network readiness.

While previous-generation SDI scanners remain available to assist customers operating legacy installations, the new Ethernet range is available immediately worldwide, signalling a definitive step forward in industrial metrology within hyper-connected manufacturing environments.
