Standard Part App Mold Wizard: Availability of standard parts is no witchcraft

From Alexander Stark

With Mold Wizard, Siemens offers a special application for the support of mould design in the injection moulding sector. In order to improve the availability of standard parts, leading companies in the supply of mould components cooperated to further improve this tool.

In order to achieve a high degree of standardisation of manufacturing processes, the use of standard parts in the design of moulds is essential. As changes during the design phase often require the exchange of standard parts, a number of companies such as Robert Hofmann, Siegfried Hofmann and Haidlmair joined forces in 2008 to form the Mold Wizard Loge. Their objective was to work with Siemens to advance the Mold Wizard and improve the availability of standard parts. This cooperation resulted in the standard part app, which provides parametric data with attributes and colours through tolerance and surface specifications, material data, manufacturers, etc., right up to manufacturing details.

Meusburger, supplier of standard parts for tool, mould and machine construction, saw the potential of this CAD standard part library very early on and provided support in the form of Excel tables, bitmaps and technical know-how. The data in the app is continuously maintained and updated. Today, the Austrian company is represented in the library with the largest number of standard parts.

“The features of the Mold Wizard from Siemens NX together with the Standard Part App are the ideal tools for standardisation. They map parts list information and guidelines for production in CAD in a simple way,” explains Harald Kaller, design engineer at Haidlmair.

What makes the standard part app so special?

Compared to most CAD solutions for a standard part library, this app offers the possibility to change component variants between manufacturers. The manufacturer of an installed standard part can be changed via a pull-down menu. In the background, the order number, the standard part geometry and the trigger body, the tolerances, the ERP number, etc. are automatically adjusted. This works without the standard part having to be re-selected, inserted, positioned and to create the pocket body.

The advantages described thus far allow for significant time savings during the design phase, but also in the event of modifications. An additional benefit is that the mentioned trigger bodies have been built to the centre of tolerance, depending on the standard part manufacturer, in order to minimise rework in production. Furthermore, the threads or core hole diameters have been specially prepared for the collision check in order to avoid inaccurate results.

Further advantages are the article number assignment for an ERP system, for SAP, Teamcenter or similar systems, as well as the weight determination, which operates depending on the material selection. All catalogue pages of the standard parts are also available offline as PDF files and can be called up directly via the dialogue window of the corresponding standard part.

In addition to a clear colour definition, the Mold Wizard also assigns so-called object attributes to the surfaces. These can be accessed with CAM operations and thus accelerate the preparation and safety for the production process.

A relatively new feature since the changeover of the Siemens NX versions to the so-called “Continuous Release” are the dynamic images. Instead of using static bitmap files, so-called SVG files are now used. They allow the user to modify the parameters directly.

Based on the feedback of users from the tool and mould making industry and the close cooperation with the software development of Siemens, the standard part app is continuously enhanced by the Mold Wizard Lodge. In the future, further development of the standard part app is also planned for the Progressive Die Wizard, the special application for punching and bending tool construction.
