From a modest start in a Vienna garage to becoming a top precision manufacturer, Gerhard Rauch specialises in moulded parts, fixtures and prototypes, utilizing a fleet of EDM machines. Now, the company expanded its capabilities with the addition of two new machines.

There are no statistics on how many companies started out in a garage like Bill Gates. Austrian precision manufacturer Gerhard Rauch is one of them. When the company founder set up a profile grinding machine in his garage in Vienna as a one-man show in 1970, he had no idea that it would later become one of Austria's top precision manufacturers: Gerhard Rauch in Trasdorf. Its core competence lies in the high-precision production of moulded parts, fixtures and prototypes, for which Sodick EDM machines are also used: currently 16 in number, the latest two since the beginning of May, an ALC400P and an AP250L for micromachining.

What started out as profile grinding as an extended workbench for tool and machine manufacturers has developed into a precision all-rounder. The contract manufacturing company currently employs 80 people and is known worldwide in its manufacturing niche in aerospace engineering, aircraft and drone construction, medical technology, Formula 1 and the automotive industry. There is hardly a technology that the design and production team at Gerhard Rauch has not mastered: whether die-sinking and wire eroding, profile grinding, jig grinding, HSC milling, CNC turning and hard turning or cylindrical grinding and pemming. There are even four marking stations for laser marking. “With the exception of gear cutting and deep hole drilling, we master all production technologies in-house,” explains Managing Director Anton Buresch. “This gives us the advantage over our competitors of being able to manufacture and supply a complete component from design to the finished, ground end product, with precision always taking centre stage across all technologies.”
