Fast and precise axis motion is facilitated by high-quality circulating ballscrew spindles and linear guides with low friction coefficients. According to Jürgen Thelen, Head of Sales for Romi Europe, repeat accuracies of 3 µm are possible when the temperature is kept constant. Tammo Bettex, K&S head of production confirmed these values, and added: "As a result of this precision and surface qualities of 4 µm RZ, we are in a position to mill even complex moulds and shapes with precise volume values using our mould rollers."
Stability and high performance spindles for speed
With the D 1500, K&S claims to have significantly boosted the productivity and performance when compared to previous machines with a similar design. “They are two to three times faster,” says the head of production. In addition to the machine stability and high-performance spindle, the large BT/BBT 50 tool adapter is said to have played a major role, its stiffness enabling the machining centre to take advantage of the performance of state-of-the-art tools.
The Sinumerik Mdynamics technology package also helps K&S build its moulds, which Siemens provided in the Romi D 1500 machining center with the Sinumerik 828D compact CNC. The integrated Advanced Surface motion control with Look Ahead and data compressor is said to allow programmers to machine the specified surface quality at the best possible speed.
Attractive for novices and pros
Production planner Alan Mehtic thinks that this is a positive feature, along with the operability. Although his programmers generate complex programs at an external workstation, “often we are faster at the machine, because the Operate user interface with the graphic Shopmill step sequence programming is extremely simple and transparent. Experienced CNC operators as well as entry-level personnel find these features equally attractive."
