Using accurately pre-sorted scrap is crucial for energy-efficient and low-CO2 steel production. High-quality scrap ensures the production of high-quality steel. Precise data on scrap composition is essential, particularly with new scrap from metal processing, allowing for exact control over the composition of the new steel.

Steel, the most recycled material globally, has evolved from being a waste product to a valuable raw material. Swiss Steel Group, the current winner of the German Sustainability Award, plays a significant role in regional circular economies with its locally based steelworks. In Germany, France, and Switzerland, most scrap for the company's plants is sourced within a 90 to 100-kilometer radius, minimizing environmental impact from transport.

Historically, scrap dealers were primarily negotiated on price. Today, they are integrated system partners rewarded for quality and punctuality. Scrap quality is continuously enhanced using a five-stage process maturity model. In collaboration with scrap suppliers and universities, Swiss Steel Group is developing a digital twin of incoming scrap. This big data project allows the steelworks to identify the exact type of scrap in advance, leading to more efficient delivery, production, and higher steel quality.

According to the company, the digital twin of scrap will revolutionise the production of green steel and intelligently drive forward the circular economy. Frank Koch, CEO of the Swiss Steel Group, emphasises: “This programme is groundbreaking for us: we are following our strategy of positioning ourselves as a leader in the field of sustainable steel production.”
