On March 19, 2025, Japan-based Sodick Co., Ltd. announced the execution of a call option to acquire a majority stake in Italian metal 3D printer manufacturer Prima Additive. This move follows the initial partnership established in 2024, when Sodick acquired a 9.5 percent minority share in the company. The transaction is expected to close in the coming months.

The acquisition represents a strategic milestone for Sodick, a global leader in high-precision machine tools and hybrid manufacturing systems. The company is aiming to expand its presence in the fast-growing field of metal additive manufacturing, particularly laser-based technologies.

Prima Additive, headquartered in Turin, Italy, serves a wide range of industries — including aerospace, automotive, energy, and medical — through its portfolio of laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition systems. The company has also been active in European R&D initiatives focused on automation, advanced manufacturing, and digital transformation.

Following the transaction, Prima Additive will retain its Italian headquarters, with the current management team, led by CEO Paolo Calefati, continuing in their roles. The collaboration will focus on strengthening joint research and development efforts, while also leveraging synergies across markets and technologies to support global growth.

Sodick sees the move as an important step in expanding both its product offering and geographic reach, aligning with increasing demand for advanced manufacturing solutions, particularly in Japan, where domestic production of complex components is being actively promoted.
