Cutting tool manufacturer Seco is rolling out a digital Sustainability Assessment Tool across its global production sites. Designed to track progress from health and safety to circularity and Net-Zero, the tool helps local teams set priorities, create action plans and share best practices to meet the company’s 2030 and 2035 sustainability goals.

Seco has introduced a structured tool to help its production sites advance sustainability in line with the company’s global targets. The initiative supports Seco’s ambition to achieve 90% circular waste by 2030 and Net-Zero operations by 2035, while fostering a safe, inclusive, and healthy workplace.

The Industrial Sustainability Assessment, first conceived in 2021, was designed to give local sites a clearer understanding of their current sustainability performance and how it aligns with company-wide goals. The tool defines six levels of maturity, ranging from meeting minimum legal requirements to achieving recognised best practices. Between these levels, sites can follow structured steps to identify priorities and track progress.

The assessment covers four main areas:

  • People and Communities: health and safety, diversity, inclusion, equity, working environment, and community engagement.
  • Climate, Biodiversity and Circularity: use of resources, emissions, and waste management.
  • Site-Specific Factors: integration of sustainability into production processes, infrastructure, and facilities.
  • Suppliers: responsibility and documentation in local supply chains.

The concept was co-developed with sites in Sweden and the Netherlands and refined with input from other international operations. The first version, released in 2023 as an Excel-based tool, quickly demonstrated the need for a more user-friendly platform. In response, Seco digitised the tool within its My Pages system, making it mobile-compatible and enabling sites to create action plans, share best practices, and monitor progress over time.

Since 2024, the digital version of the Sustainability Assessment Tool has been in use across Seco’s global production network. According to the company, the system helps sites to better understand their sustainability performance, prioritise improvements, and contribute more effectively to Seco’s long-term environmental and social commitments.
