Getting into multi-shot applications requires moulders to dedicate significant resources to successfully achieve these types of applications. Typically, this would involve either utilising multiple single shot machines or using a dedicated 2K injection machine, both of which have their limitations and downsides.

Using multiple single shot machines requires moulders to physically move the part from one machine to another using manual labour or by robot. Not only does this process increase the cycle time — which increases the cost of the part — but it also takes up production capacity on the second machine that could be used for something else. Alternatively, a dedicated 2K injection machine will improve productivity but requires significant capital investment assuming manufacturers have the floor space to accommodate another large piece of equipment. 2K machines are usually available with extended lead times of 52 weeks or more. Furthermore, if the moulder does not expect to accommodate many multi-shot applications it can make it difficult to find ways to keep the machine in production.
