Tool manufacturer Tungaloy shows how you can get the most out of high-performance cutting (HPC) without investing in a new machining centre or relocating abroad.

In view of current challenges, cutting tool manufacturer Tungaloy recommends high feed milling. With its milling systems, such as the Dofeed shown here, this can be achieved without any problems even on older machines.(Bild: Tungaloy)

If you need fast, precise and economical machining, high-feed milling is the way to go. And with Tungaloy systems, high-feed milling allows you to get the most out of your machines. Although the load on the cutting tools increases, the heat generated is safely dissipated with the chips, according to Tungaloy. This even allows dry machining. It should be noted that the milling systems score points with their significantly lower spindle load. The cutting forces are directed in the axial direction, enabling low-vibration machining with large cutting depths, as Tungaloy explains. This is ideal for older or less powerful machines in particular.

In HPC milling speed is not the only factor that counts. The feed per tooth, the cutting depth and the optimal tool strategy are also decisive. After all, high-performance cutting is about removing as much material as possible efficiently and precisely in the shortest possible time. The downside is that the load on the tool increases. But according to Tungaloy, this is not a problem if the tool is up to the task. And that is precisely the point. Where other tools reach their limits, Tungaloy milling cutters really come into their own. Thanks to special geometries, robust substrates and clever clamping systems, the milling systems deliver top performance across the board — even under full load. Let's take a look at what's on offer...

Described as a classic in the high feed range, Dofeed scores with wiper indexable inserts. Instead of roughing and then finishing, both steps can be completed in a single machining operation. The surfaces of the workpiece are left very smooth (centre roughness well below one micrometre). The special chip formation and central coolant supply make the Dofeed series the first choice when speed and quality are paramount, promises Tungaloy.

More teeth mean better bite

Are you looking to machine wide pockets and mill large surfaces? Then take a closer look at the Dofeedquad system. It can handle anything. The face milling cutter with the ‘swallowtail’ not only provides secure hold for the indexable inserts, but also ensures excellent chip evacuation thanks to its wiper cutting edge. It can achieve a feed rate of up to 14 millimetres per revolution. According to Tungaloy, that's more than milling. The system is considered a real trump card for machining, especially on older machines with less power.

When milling with eight cutting edges on one insert, every blank is turned into a precision part in no time at all, promises Tungaloy with regard to the Millquadfeed. This is because it works with a cutting depth of up to 2.5 millimetres and a feed rate of two millimetres per tooth. Its particularly smooth running, as emphasised, makes it the ideal tool for high performance with a gentle effect on the user's ears. And despite all its power, the milling cutter always remains comparatively cool.

The spiral-shaped indexable inserts in the Tungaloy Dotwistball system virtually show conventional tools the cold edge, according to the manufacturer. The special design ensures that chips flow away reliably without attacking the screw heads. Dotwistball is a good choice for milling grooves or pockets or for drilling holes by plunging with helical movements.

The Tungforcefeed series is small but powerful. It puts an end to vibrations with small diameters or long overhangs. With diameters starting at eight millimetres, the system mills its way unerringly through narrow pockets and complex shapes. The stable cutting edges and special chip shape ensure a cool head — even under high pressure.

With six cutting edges on a single indexable insert, even roughing becomes a walk in the park, according to Tungaloy. This statement refers to the Dofeed-Tri tool system. Its trigonal geometry prevents insert movement during milling, ensuring a secure fit. The robust tool really comes into its own in ramp milling and with long tool overhangs, according to the manufacturer. The reduced entry angle also eliminates chatter marks.
