Steel manufactuter GMH Gruppe is consolidating its open-die forging and tool steel activities by aligning Kind & Co., Schmiedewerke Gröditz and Buderus Edelstahl under a single industrial structure. The newly formed Open-Die Forging Group is a central element of the company’s transformation strategy and is intended to strengthen its position in Europe’s forging and tool steel markets.

The integration focuses on coordinated production planning, metallurgy, logistics and sales, with GMH Gruppe expecting efficiency gains through aligned processes and joint capacity management. Each brand will retain a defined industrial role, allowing the group to address a wide range of customer requirements from standard tool steels to premium remelted qualities. Together, the three companies cover the full value chain from scrap-based melting and remelting through forging, machining, heat treatment and distribution.

“With the merger of Kind & Co., Schmiedewerke Gröditz and Buderus Edelstahl into the GMH Open-Die Forging Group, we are bringing together three strong companies to form an organisation with a unique product and service portfolio,” said Dr. Alexander Becker, CEO of GMH Gruppe.

GMH Gruppe positioned the move as a contribution to industrial supply security amid rising demand for reliable European sourcing in sectors such as automotive, mechanical engineering and die-casting. Combined inventories across Germany, Italy, China and the United States are expected to improve material availability, while annual output across the integrated portfolio exceeds 100,000 tonnes.

To support the integration, GMH Gruppe plans investments of around €30 million, including new equipment for higher purity steelmaking, expanded hardening capacity for large components, and energy-efficient furnace modernisation. The group said it will continue to rely exclusively on electric furnace production using recycled scrap, achieving CO₂ reductions of up to 80% compared with conventional blast furnace routes.
