Weiler Abrasives has expanded its portfolio for roll grinding with the introduction of Fortis mill grinding wheels for hot and cold mill operations. The new product line is designed to increase productivity and reduce operating costs in steel and aluminium rolling mills, delivering up to 20 percent longer wheel life compared with previous generations.

The Fortis mill wheels are based on advanced ceramic grain technology combined with a proprietary grain retention system. According to the company, this combination enables consistently high material removal rates while maintaining stable grinding behaviour, even on difficult-to-machine materials. Longer service life reduces the frequency of wheel changes and associated downtime, supporting higher overall equipment efficiency in roll grinding operations.

A key feature of the new wheels is a self-sharpening ceramic grain that continuously fractures during use, creating new cutting edges throughout the grinding process. This results in shorter grinding cycles and more uniform stock removal. The bonding system further enhances durability and improves the g-ratio, increasing the volume of workpiece material removed relative to wheel wear.

The Fortis mill range is available in formulations tailored to the different requirements of hot and cold rolling mills. For hot mill applications, coarser grains are used to maximise material removal where surface finish requirements are less critical. For cold mill grinding, finer grits are specified to achieve precise surface finishes and low roughness values, while minimising defects such as chatter marks or spirals.

In addition to the new product launch, Weiler Abrasives offers technical support and application expertise to help mills optimise their grinding processes. On-site testing, process documentation and training are intended to ensure stable, repeatable results and safe operation in demanding roll grinding environments.
