China’s SMTCL has introduced the VMC-B series vertical machining centres with X-axis travels from 580mm up to 2,100mm and spindle speeds of a maximum of 10,000 rpm.

Large Z-axis travels of maximum 800mm are said to provide a larger envelope than other machines of the same table size (up to 2,200 x 800mm). According to the supplier, which is the largest machine tool builder in the world, a wide range of customisation options are available for the range to make these already flexible machines even more versatile.

The machine structures are said to be rigid, with all major components such as the bed and columns made of cast-iron with good vibration dampening and thermal characteristics. This ensures accuracy, high-speed and highly efficient machining, the company said. It pointed out that the high-precision linear guideways and ball screws as well as the electric motor system guarantee workpiece accuracy and repeatability.

The Z axis adopts cast-iron guideways to reduce vibration during heavy cutting operations. Lead screw X, Y and Z axes feature roller linear guideways, which are said to offer low kinetic and static friction, high sensitivity and minimum vibration at high speeds. Moreover, a mass-flow coolant pump and large-capacity water tank guarantee excellent cooling, the manufacturer said.

The spindle surface coolant nozzle supports both water and air cooling controlled via M-code or directly via the control panel, the supplier explained, adding that an airgun is also included.
