In tool grinding, the ultra-fine filtration of lubricoolant has become an important value-added and quality factor. Ultra-fine coolant filtration makes a decisive contribution to extending the service life of tools and machine components, ensuring process quality and reducing operating costs. Clean cooling lubricant is essential to ensure consistent machining quality and stability during tool grinding. And coolants that no longer need to be changed so often not only save costs by reducing non-productive times, but also in terms of procurement, storage and recycling.

Optimally cleaned cooling lubricants play a significant role in tool grinding, as chips, wheel abrasion and other particles can severely disrupt the grinding process in the now narrowly defined tolerance ranges, right down to micro-tools. Steffen Strobel, Technical Sales Manager at filter manufacturer Vomat from Treuen: “Ultra-fine cooling lubricant filtration is extremely important in tool grinding, as it plays a key role in the efficiency, precision and service life of the entire grinding process. There are many reasons why it is so important:”

Increased tool life due to reduced wear: Clean cooling lubricant (CL) ensures that the grinding process contains fewer abrasive particles, which otherwise act like abrasives and wear the grinding tool more quickly. This extends the service life of the grinding tool and reduces the frequency of tool changes.

Improved surface quality: Ultra-fine filtered coolants prevent particles from getting onto the workpiece and causing surface defects such as scratches or roughness. This ensures a high surface quality, which is particularly important for precision tools.

Less downtime and maintenance costs: As the cooling lubricant remains cleaner, less frequent cleaning and maintenance work on the cooling system is required. The intervals between cleanings are longer. This reduces machine downtimes and lowers operating costs.

Greater precision and process accuracy: Dirty lubricoolant can lead to inaccuracies during grinding, as grinding particles influence the stock removal — resulting in dimensional deviations. A clean lubricoolant supply ensures compliance with tight tolerances and greater precision.

Steffen Strobel: “To ensure a high level of production and quality — but also to exploit rationalization potential — Vomat provides high-performance filtration systems that combine all the technical Vomat advantages despite their compact design and small footprint. With various additional components, individual solutions can be configured up to large-scale systems and easily integrated into the respective production processes.”

Vomat filters clean in full flow and separate dirty and clean oil 100 percent. In this way, the user only ever grinds with clean coolant. To keep the filters clean, Vomat technology backflushes as required. To do this, the degree of contamination of each individual filter element is determined. Above a certain level, the control system automatically initiates the backwashing process. Meanwhile, the other filter elements continue to ensure a continuous and complete clean oil supply with a cleanliness level of 3-5 µm. This fully automatic control and regulation of the filter capacity keeps energy and operating costs low. In addition, Vomat technology controls the temperature of the cooling lubricant medium in the range of ± 0.2 K during the grinding process. With special concepts for reusable material processing and recycling, the reusable material can be collected directly in the recycling company's collection container and then disposed of and processed in a cost-optimized manner.
