Injection moulding and mould-making technologies have been an integral part of Toolcraft’s services for 20 years, and the company has successfully expanded in these areas. Alongside processing common thermoplastics and high-temperature materials, Toolcraft now also manufactures components made of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) — including a cup lid and a lens.

Working with long-standing partners for injection moulding and mould-making, Toolcraft has successfully completed a challenging and innovative project. Collaborating with SKZ, Günther Heisskanaltechnik, Meusburger Georg and Bestenlehrer, two moulded parts made of liquid silicone rubber with completely different geometries were manufactured in a single shot on a single mould. This included a cup lid with a diameter of 100 mm and a maximum wall thickness of 7 mm, with a shot weight of 28 g. And a lens with a diameter of 35 mm and a shot weight of 6 g, manufactured in the same mould. One challenge was the significant difference in shot weight between the two moulded parts, which was solved by using a balanced needle valve mould. Corrosion-resistant steels with good polishing properties were used on the injection mould for the basic structure and the inserts.

“Working closely with industry experts made it possible to complete this challenging project”, says Markus Scheuerlein, Project Manager Mould Making at Toolcraft. Thomas Lender, Business Unit Manager Injection Moulding at Toolcraft, highlights the legacy of the project: “Our expertise in manufacturing precision micro parts meant we could create this mould for silicone injection moulding. Now, we are manufacturing silicone moulds for the industry as well”.
