Together the three partner institutes will present “Plastic optical components from Aachen” at the “kunststoffland NRW” joint booth in Hall B4, Booth 4404.

Today, plastics have proved to be the material of the future for optical devices such as lenses with varied technological applications, which enable economical production as well. Other areas include the automotive industry, like primary optics and diffuser lenses, and also in mobile phone cameras, displays and lifestyle products.

On exhibit at Fakuma will be advancements in these areas concentrating on the design of optical systems, from the construction of tools and mould inserts to optics replication, featuring injection-moulded and compression injection-moulded optics, continuously manufactured optical film and optical materials and applications.

The highlight will be the production of micro-structured lenses of liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Thanks to its temperature and UV stability, LSR is interesting for LEDs. Its flexibility and elasticity also open up innovative design concepts.

Visitors at the booth will be treated to live demonstrations of the injection process for the production of micro-structured LSR lenses.

IKV, the Institute of Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen University, is Europe-wide, a leading research and education institute engaged in the field of plastics processing with a high reputation, while RWTH Aachen University has a long tradition in research and development, which among them is in the field of optical components.

The close co-operation among the three Aachen research institutes offers comprehensive expertise at all stages of the production chain, the institutes note. After Fakuma, they will present this expertise on April 10 - 11, 2018 at the Aachen Polymer Optics Days. This conference will be presented for the third time in Aachen, Germany.
