In additive manufacturing, production time is often lost due to manual workflows in build preparation. Synera and Materialise are now offering a solution to this problem by creating a direct connection between the Magics SDK and Synera's agent-based AI platform for engineers, thereby automating build preparation.

With access to the Magics SDK, Synera users can now deploy additive manufacturing agents that autonomously handle tasks from design all the way to printing. Throughput is scaled while manual effort and costs are reduced.(Bild: Synera)

Materialise Magicsis a trusted partner for data and build preparation in additive manufacturing for over 30 years. The new Magics SDK, introduced in 2024, enables platform integration with Magics' powerful build preparation algorithms – including automatic and manual repair of file errors, optimisation of part orientation, generation of support structures and slicing functions. These tools enable AM engineers to successfully prepare even the most complex models for printing, reduce failed prints and improve part quality.

Agent-based engineering platform with Synera

Synera's platform enables engineering organisations to create and deploy collaborative AI agents. These agents support teams and independently perform tasks in product development. The platform's user-friendly visual editor allows engineers to automate at multiple levels of complexity – from simple tasks to complex end-to-end AM workflows – thanks to fully developed multi-agent systems that integrate seamlessly with tools such as Materialise's Magics SDK. The first Magics SDK connector for Synera offers comprehensive functionality:

  • Automated file repair and preparation directly from Synera
  • Generation and customisation of support structures
  • Advanced editing and modification of files

The software enables users to create end-to-end automation workflows for additive manufacturing, significantly reducing failed prints and ensuring that models are correctly prepared before printing. In combination with other additive manufacturing solutions in the Synera Marketplace, users can control the entire AM workflow from design to production – through connections to other tools such as nesting, simulation of the build process and 3D AM machine software.

The integration with Synera enables closer integration between design and construction preparation workflows and provides developers with immediate feedback on manufacturability and optimisation of the structure directly within a single environment..

Joining forces to advance the industrial use of additive manufacturing

Both companies see this collaboration as part of a broader industry effort to accelerate the proliferation of additive manufacturing. “Our customers are already transforming their engineering processes with Synera by handing over repetitive tasks that all engineers dread to AI agents that autonomously optimise and prepare complex designs – with less human intervention. By integrating Materialise's industry-leading build preparation capabilities, our users can create comprehensive AM workflows that prevent printing errors due to inadequate file preparation while standardising and digitising their processes,” said Andrew Sartorelli, Partner & Product Management Lead at Synera.

This focus on practical automation and customer needs fits perfectly with Materialise's vision for its technology:

“With the Magics SDK, we are opening up decades of experience in additive manufacturing to help manufacturers automate and scale their workflows,” said Gilles Claeys, Partnership Manager at Materialise. “The connection with Synera enables tighter integration between design and build preparation workflows and provides developers with immediate feedback on manufacturability and build optimisation directly within one environment.”

Automatically identify and resolve common issues

This integration has been driven by several companies that are playing a leading role in the industrialisation of additive manufacturing, including BMW. “As an engineer who has been working in additive manufacturing for years, repeatedly repairing files for hundreds of parts is one of the most time-consuming but crucial tasks in the workflow. Integrating Materialise's robust AM capabilities into Synera's automation platform means that we can now adapt build preparation to our own workflows to automatically identify and fix common problems. This not only saves hours of tedious manual work, but also ensures consistent quality across all projects,” explains Johannes Kolb, engineer at BMW AG. The Materialise Magics SDK Connector is now available in the Synera Marketplace.
