Belgium – Cecimo, the European Association for the Machine Tool Industries and related Manufacturing Technologies, welcomes the introduction of a new classification provision for AM machines in its product nomenclature. This will be used by over 200 countries.

The product nomenclature, known as the Harmonized System, is maintained by World Customs Organisations (WCO) and adopted by authorities to classify goods in international trade, says Cecimo, which advocates contributing to the business environment to market competitive manufacturing solutions worldwide. The introduction of this new classification code, initially proposed by the EU that is based on Cecimo's input, will improve the compilation of statistics of materials used in AM machines internationally. This code, which is like a common language in trade negotiations, will also facilitate the inclusion of AM machines in bilateral or multilateral trade-deal talks globally.

“Standardisation is of vital importance in the industrialisation of AM. Work is progressing on standards in materials, processes and applications,” said Filip Geerts, Director General at Cecimo. He added that this task will fill another vacuum in the standards’ landscape, leading to greater official intelligence on AM machine marketing dynamics, which helps achieve more accurate strategies for the AM sector.

Officially approved by parties adhering to the WCO’s Harmonized System, this classification code will come in effect on 1 January 2022 as part of a revised product nomenclature. Cecimo is currently supporting EU custom officials on the formal definition of an AM machine.
