SME, US-based society of mechanical engineers, has elected Zach Simkin from Senvol to serve as chairman for SME’s Additive Manufacturing (AM) Community.
The SME AM Advisory Committee advises SME on initiatives, activities, policy and strategy related to AM. Senvol's President Zach Simkin, the new chairman for SME's AM Committee, is in the third year of a three-year term as an advisor, and previously served as vice chair before being elected chairman.
At the recent Rapid + TCT Conference held in May in Detroit, MI, incoming Chair Simkin presented an award to outgoing Chair, Jennifer Fielding.
SME’s AM technical community advisors serve as the primary resource for guidance to the society and its members on AM technologies, including materials, processes, industrial base and workforce. The primary responsibility of the committee is to advise SME on initiatives, activities, policy and strategy related to AM.
Suzy Marzano, SME's product development manager, said: “AM continues to be a major strategic initiative for SME and a vital emerging sector for manufacturing as a whole.” She added that SME appreciates Simkin's vision and leadership to help extend its leadership position in the industry.
Community advisors are chosen based on a combination of active industry contributions, reputation and personal commitment to expand the use of AM and the role of the advisors is to provide timely and expert guidance to SME on AM activities, initiatives and content to best serve the AM community. The AM advisors also serve as “faces of the industry” for SME and represent various stakeholders within the technical community.
Jennifer Fielding who is also section chief of composite performance and applications section at Air Force Research Laboratory noted: “Zach is extremely committed to helping the AM industry advance and is a true thought leader in the industry.”
SME promotes advanced manufacturing technology and develops a skilled workforce. Its member-led AM community focuses on technologies and processes that help conceive, test, improve and manufacture new products to bring them to market faster and most cost-effectively.
Senvol provides data to help companies implement AM. Its products and services, which are also used by Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, allow companies access, generate and analyse AM data.
