For roughing and finishing operations in small diameter milling, Kennametal now offers the Mill 1-7 high-performance shoulder mills. This line is specifically engineered to cover ramping, slotting, and plunging for aerospace, energy, and general engineering applications, the company said.

The small diameter end mills only use one insert, which improves productivity, reduces inventory, and decreases machining costs, Kennametal noted. It added that the inserts are designed with elliptical cutting edges with a straight 90-degree wall and true degree lead, enabling the replacement of SCEM finish machining in some applications.

Mill 1-7 inserts come in three grades for various applications and conditions: The KC725M grade for general and heavy steel, stainless steel and ductile cast iron milling applications, the multi-layered TiN-TiCN-Al2O3-CVD-coated KCPK30 grade for general and rough milling of steels and cast irons, and the KC522M grade, said to be engineered to provide better performance in general machining of high-temperature alloys and stainless steel.
