Votteler Lackfabrik Quality coating in injection moulds eliminates polishing process

Germany - Thanks to an advanced casting lacquer system, ornamental plastic and wooden parts can be coated directly in the reaction injection moulding process. The coating meets high visual and haptic standards and is done quickly, efficiently and without external release agent in the moulding tool.

Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM) is a prototype moulding process used to produce moulded plastic parts through low-pressure injection, and also for back-injection of ornamental and design parts, for example made of real wood veneer and foil. For both applications, the advanced RIM system Puriflow by Votteler Lackfabrik unlocks potentials to coat surfaces with the RIM process faster, more efficiently and with an unprecedented freedom in design. In this system, the lacquer is applied parallel to the prototype or back-injection process in the same cycle. Thus, the part leaves the machine fully coated. The new parts can be given various properties, like exceptional scratch resistance, a colourless or coloured finish, new metallic accents, or a self-healing effect.

The new generation of Puriflow lacquers is equipped with an internal release agent for automatic demoulding, so there is no more need to apply an external release agent on the mould after each shot. Production can run fully automated and interruption-free, which increases productivity, allows to pack or further process the component without further treatments like polishing, and also eliminates costs for external release agents.

The solvent-free, two-component Puriflow casting lacquers are based on aliphatic polyurethanes, which can be processed bubble-free on casting machines and can be used as a coating for various plastics, like PC, PC-ABS, ABS, PC-PBT, PC-ASA, ASA, TPU and even PP, as well as carbon, composites, glass, foils and real wood veneers.

This versatility makes for a very wide range of applications for interior and exterior parts in the automotive industry, for consumer goods, in electronics and everywhere where visible parts requiring high surface quality are produced in larger quantities.

The modular structure of the casting lacquer system plays a big role in this, as it enables producers to customise the coating’s look, feel and properties to individual customer preferences and requirements. Whether it’s transparent, piano black, a high-quality reflective chrome look or an elegant iridescent metallic accent, Puriflow allows for an unprecedented freedom of design, with effect, decorative and brilliant lacquers in various shades of colour. The gloss level can be anything from high gloss to matt, and surfaces can be smooth, textured or have a soft touch effect.
