PWO SEE, a manufacturing company located in Kragujevac, Serbia, has upgraded its Wenzel Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) by implementing the Easy CMM Chameleon Retrofit Solution. The retrofit addressed operational challenges related to the machine’s aging technology and enabled the company to align with modern quality control requirements.

The company had encountered several difficulties with its existing CMM system. A deteriorating original controller caused reliability issues, while outdated software was incompatible with current manufacturing standards. Additionally, an ownership change required integration of the CMM into a new organizational technology framework. These challenges necessitated an upgrade to maintain quality control processes and operational efficiency.

Traditional solutions for retrofitting the equipment were considered but presented limitations, including extensive software rewrites and potential disruptions to ongoing operations. To address these issues effectively, PWO SEE d.o.o. collaborated with NM3Diberica, a service provider specializing in CMM systems, to implement the Chameleon Type R controller.

The retrofit solution offered a direct replacement for the failing controller, with seamless integration into PC-DMIS software and compatibility with Hexagon CMM network standards. The implementation process included replacing the controller, configuring and calibrating the software, and validating the entire system. This approach minimized downtime and allowed the company to quickly restore its quality control capabilities.

The results of the retrofit have been significant. The updated CMM has provided operational continuity by restoring reliable functionality, modernized the system to align with current manufacturing standards, and enabled full integration with the company’s updated technological infrastructure. The solution avoided the need for a costly replacement of the entire machine and demonstrated long-term reliability, with consistent performance reported over a year of continuous operation.

The adoption of the Chameleon Retrofit Solution has allowed PWO SEE d.o.o. to extend the operational life of its Wenzel CMM while maintaining compatibility with its organizational requirements. This approach ensured that the company could address its quality control challenges efficiently without incurring unnecessary expenses.
