Following the success of the nutcracker video for Christmas 2023, which received more than 10,000 views, CAD/CAM developer Open Mind is releasing another festive machining video this year. The partners in this campaign were Hermle USA and Fraisa USA. The milled object is a Santa Claus.

For the CAM programming of the 146 mm high Santa, the application engineers at Hermle and Open Mind relied on a variety of well-known Hypermill strategies. The ‘3D-optimised roughing’ strategy enables fast, efficient and close-contour roughing. In addition, various 3- and 5-axis surface strategies were used for 3+2 and simultaneous machining. Thanks to the collision avoidance in 5-axis profile finishing, even narrow and undercut areas could be machined without any problems. The machining processes were simulated with Hypermill Virtual Machining to quickly run in programs. Santa Claus, weighing 389 g, was milled from a 2350 g aluminium block in four hours using Fraisa tools on a Hermle C 400 with HS flex handling system.
