The second International Plastics Design Competition (IPDC), expected to be a highlight of NPE2012, is open for entries from companies and individuals worldwide. SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association,: which organizes the triennial NPE plastics fair, requires that entries be submitted online at www.plasticsdesign.org by February 1.

NPE2012 takes place April 1–5 at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Competition entries can be for finished products or for components and can be submitted by any individual or company along the supply chain: designer, toolmaker, processor, material supplier, equipment builder or OEM.

Photos and details for most entries will be posted at www.plasticsdesign.org. Visitors to the site can cast their votes for a People’s Choice award there, a prize that will supplement the formal judge-determined awards. At NPE2012, products and parts entered in competition will be prominently displayed in the OCCC’s South Building.

An awards ceremony and reception will take place on April 3 during NPE2012. Both winners and their supply chain contributors will be recognized and honoured at the ceremony.

All awards other than the People’s Choice will be the decisions of judges selected by SPI for their knowledge of plastics and design. Entries can be submitted in any of 18 end-use market categories, ranging from agriculture to transportation. A winning product in each category will be distinguished with an award, and there will be a grand award for the most innovative part or product in the competition. In addition, awards honouring advances in sustainability and other special awards will be distributed.

A separate panel of judges chosen by the Industrial Designers Society of America will select the winner of another award that is cosponsored by the society and by the industry newspaper Plastics News.

The IPDC is organized by SPI. Details on the competition can be found at www.plasticsdesign.org, including photos and information on winning entries in the first IPDC, which was held at NPE2009.
