As a supplier of components and equipment for the plastics processing industry and the toolmaking sector, Nonnenmann also offers interesting solutions and clever aids for tool maintenance. Preventive maintenance and servicing work, such as regular maintenance of an injection moulding tool in a defined cycle, as well as spontaneous, unforeseen work, for example due to tool damage, can be optimised with the solutions from the company's maintenance line. In practice, turning and opening injection moulding tools often causes unnecessary disruptions to workflows and even serious accidents at work, due to outdated handling or dangerous procedures. In particular, the processes involved in tool maintenance have a major influence on process reliability and workflows in production and can be optimised and time and costs saved by taking preventive action.

At Fakuma 2024, the company is presenting an innovation, the Nowmove-MSB maintenance station. The compact device is the all-round solution for moulds weighing up to 2.5 tonnes — a turnover device, opener, maintenance and testing workstation are combined here for ergonomic and safe handling of the moulds. The integrated air cushion function enables simple, easy and convenient maintenance of tools. The system is used in toolmaking, maintenance and in injection moulding and die casting production, and supports users in turning, opening, repairing, cleaning, testing and assembling tools.

“Nowmove stands for movement. With this innovation, the entire handling of tools for turning and opening can be carried out on one device. But movement also reflects our focus on the further development of targeted new products for the industry. We want to make a difference together,” says Managing Director Volker Nonnenmann, emphasising the motivation behind the new development, which was carried out in collaboration with partner company RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz (Aalen/ Germany). “Since various tasks and tests are also required during each maintenance, we have designed the Nowmove as a new type of maintenance station (maintenance-station-bench, or MSB for short), hence Nowmove-MSB. Tool maintenance has never been so easy,” explains project manager Jochen Schwegler (Technical Consultant for Application Technology), describing the new product. The première at Fakuma 2024 has been deliberately chosen because this trade fair is the established meeting place for the injection moulding and toolmaking industries.

The maintenance station is designed for mould weights of up to 2.5 tonnes. The combination of a mould turner, mould opener and maintenance and testing workstation in a single device offers users a variety of advantages, such as space and time savings, greater occupational safety and cost savings, since at least three individual systems were previously required for the same work. According to the manufacturer, the ROI is one year, which, combined with the wide range of practical uses, makes the device a manageable and interesting investment as a new acquisition.

The table can be easily turned through 90° by means of the built-in chain drive, which is controlled by a cordless screwdriver. The turning frame can be safely stopped in any intermediate position, thus simplifying access to the tool and ergonomic working.

For the opening function, the product developers constructed the table frame from two different sides. The fixed clamping plate, with a dimension of 800 x 800 mm, is equipped with several adjustable T-slot rails that can be moved in position and thus flexibly adapted to the mould. The mould is attached to this side of the table with the clamping plate and remains stationary when the mould is opened. The other side of the table functions as a work table with a surface area of 1200 x 800 mm. The highlight here is the freely movable plate with an air bearing. The mould can be easily opened, pulled apart and moved by hand on the table with ease, simply by connecting it to compressed air. The plate works like an air cushion and offers space for tool halves with a base area of up to 496 x 396 mm.

The ergonomic table working height can be adjusted from 880 mm to 1,100 mm to suit the required conditions. The levelling feet compensate for any unevenness in the installation surface, thus ensuring safe working.

The device has a compact footprint for flexible use in the factory and can be moved using a forklift or pallet truck. If required, the table can also be used as a spotting aid thanks to its turning and opening functions.

In addition to the functions of the Nowmove-MSB for safe and easy turning and opening of the tools, the device also offers further applications with a focus on the maintenance tasks of injection moulds. MSB stands for Maintenance Station Bench and thus makes the combination device a comprehensive maintenance station, an ‘all-round carefree package’. Other tasks that need to be carried out during every mould maintenance can also be performed directly on the table.

The integrated leak test using compressed air allows the mould's temperature control channels to be checked for leaks directly. Testing with compressed air is simple and clean, since the input of the temperature control channel to be tested is simply connected to the test station and the dummy coupling is placed on the temperature control output. This means that possible leaks can be detected by a loss of pressure on the manometer and promptly eliminated.

The Nowmove-MSBHY hydraulic unit (Art. No.: WA0271) is also available as an optional accessory package for the Nowmove-MSB (Art. No.: WA0270), which can be ordered installed directly at the time of purchase or retrofitted later by hand.

With the additional package, the maintenance station is expanded to include a hydraulic unit, which can be used, among other things, to check the function of the ejector package or core pulls.

The additional hydraulic connection allows the function of slide systems, core pulls, needle shut-off nozzles and hydraulic cylinders to be checked.

Furthermore, the height of the hydraulically actuated cylinder can be adjusted and thus adapted to the respective mould; by extending and retracting, function tests of the ejector set can be carried out. As a further advantage, users can make use of this function to support the opening of the mould if back-pressure pins are installed in the mould.

The use of the Nowmove-MSB maintenance station optimises the workflows for mould handling and maintenance, reduces transport times and increases the operating times and availability of employees and crane systems. The aim is to keep mould and machine downtimes as low as possible and to optimise planning and process reliability. This controlled approach to handling tools also helps to prevent damage to the tools and infrastructure and increases occupational safety to prevent hazards and accidents for employees.

Nowmove-MSB serves as a comprehensive central workplace with a higher level of occupational safety, covering and simplifying all tasks related to the maintenance and servicing of tools. The aim is to avoid time losses due to set-up, retooling and repair work and to make maintenance tasks simpler, easier, more convenient and safer.
