A new transport beam configurator from Nonnenmann streamlines static calculation, documentation and ordering — helping mould makers meet rising safety and compliance demands.

As a component supplier for the mould and tool making industry as well as plastics processing, Nonnenmann works in close cooperation with its customers and is involved early in the tool creation and design process. This allows users to receive support from the initial idea through to the finished part. Already during the design phase, the selection, calculation and dimensioning of individual components and tool elements set crucial parameters for later workplace safety when handling the tool. This includes, among others, the transport beam.
In mould and tool making, the transport beam is a tool-specific component used for lifting, transporting, and securing the closed mould. It connects the two halves of the mould, preventing unintentional opening and ensuring safety during mould mounting and removal on the injection moulding machine. Its static design must be tailored to the total mould weight, the centre of gravity and the distances between the fastening screws. To comply with occupational safety regulations and to meet increasing requirements and growing complexity, a structured and standards-compliant procedure for the static design of transport beams is required. In addition, end customers are increasingly requesting documented proof of the mechanical safety of the designed transport beam.
“To enable quick, simple and safer configuration of transport beams with the required safety verification, we have developed our own configurator. It will support our customers in this crucial step and simplify their work,” explains Managing Director Volker Nonnenmann. From November 2025, the new online configurator will be available, allowing users to create statically designed transport beams — complete with a certificate for the respective mould — based on individual dimensional and weight specifications. Users will also receive information on price and delivery time for the configured beam, enabling them to order production directly via the online shop. The configurator’s static calculation module is based on the current VDWF guideline “Guideline for the static design of transport beams in mould and tool making,” developed by Nonnenmann.

In compliance with the standards DIN EN 1090-1, DIN EN 13001-3-1, the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), and DIN EN 13155, the company provides a standardised calculation method as well as clear definitions of stability and load-bearing capacity. The configurator supports users in the static design of both the transport beams and the fastening threads on the tool. Standardisation and calculation principles in accordance with the VDWF guideline ensure that the design meets tool requirements and adheres to safety regulations.
With the configurator, the company offers a free tool for the fast and simple configuration of transport beams while meeting all safety requirements regarding stability and load capacity. Transparent pricing and fast procurement are also ensured. The configurator’s features address the needs and tasks of design/engineering, purchasing, and toolmaking departments. During configuration, users may additionally request the appropriate certificate as proof of static safety for the transport beam.
Manufacturing of the transport beams takes place in-house at the company’s Schorndorf (Germany) site. Thanks to its capabilities as an extended workbench for toolmaking and mechanical engineering in the area of special parts, short delivery times can be achieved. The company supplies transport beams for moulds weighing up to 2,000 kg, made from square steel 1.1730, in four standardised cross-sections: 20 × 30 mm, 30 × 40 mm, 40 × 50 mm, and 50 × 70 mm — selected according to the calculated load case. The total tool weight, screw distances and thread sizes must be taken from the CAD design data for configuration. For clear identification as a load-bearing safety element, each transport beam is supplied with a standard red powder-coated finish. In addition, each beam is laser-marked with AS (ejector side), DS (nozzle side), the tool number, the maximum load capacity and an individual article code.
“We are pleased to provide our customers with a solution that bundles everything into a single offering — quick and easy configuration, safety certification, standardisation, price calculation and manufacturing,” emphasises Nonnenmann. Beyond improved workplace safety and compliance with legal and general guidelines through correctly dimensioned transport beams, customers also benefit from reduced procurement effort and the elimination of internal manufacturing costs. Load calculations, raw material sourcing, machining, powder coating, labelling and certificate issuance are all handled by Nonnenmann.
