Owing to strong market demand, Mann+Hummel: is enlarging its manufacturing footprint in the USA. The US subsidiary of the German-based development partner and filters supplier will establish a satellite production facility for OEM parts in Dunlap, Tennessee, which should generate 150 new jobs by the end of 2013.

An investment of $15 million (€11.6 million) will support this expansion of the company’s manufacturing capacity.

Additionally, Mann+Hummel USA has expanded the operations of its Michigan warehouse and distribution centre. The company has recently increased the area of that facility and introduced production and assembly operations for OEM parts there.

“NAFTA and South America are significant growth markets for Mann+Hummel,” says Alfred Weber, CEO of Mann+Hummel. The group plans to increase turnover from €2.18 billion in 2011 to as much as €3.4 billion by 2018. Management expects the Americas to account for roughly 25% of this higher level of turnover, whereas in 2010 South America accounted for 10% of turnover and the NAFTA region for 12%.

“The new manufacturing site, 150 new technicians and workers, and new services will help to better serve the increasing demand of our customers and to turn our growth goals into reality,” Weber asserts.

Principal Mann+Hummel customer markets are the automotive and industrial equipment segments. The US vehicle market is recovering, especially the heavy-duty segment where growth has been strong. Passenger car production is expected to have grown approximately 10% in 2011. German brands are participating in this recovery, because higher fuel prices have driven American car buyers to place greater importance on fuel efficiency. Production growth with respect to commercial vehicles may be 40% for 2011.

The industrial equipment segment is expected to grow substantially. A high demand for industrial machinery, in combination with environmental legislation that is continually tightening rules, represents a strong business opportunity for Mann+Hummel.
