New functions also simplify electrode construction

CAD/CAM manufacturer Open Mind recently released Version 2018.1 of the Hyper-Mill software suite. Several new functions have been included: ‘soft overlap’ blending enhancements, 3D-optimised roughing for high feed cutters, and ‘global fitting,’ a CAM-oriented CAD function. The software also features process-optimised functions for electrode manufacturing, Open Mind announced.

Reportedly, Open Mind has optimised 3D roughing processes when machining with high feed cutters. The step-over distance can be calculated from the scallop height measured against the high feed cutter geometry.

A special tool path movement removes rest material from corners when there is a very high lateral infeed. Intelligent cut division and optimised toolpaths provide greater process safety for remaining thin ridges, the company states.

Why outsourcing with trusted partners makes sense

12/29/2017 - Production might run perfectly smooth, but when manufacturers face urgent special orders, in-house ressources often reach their limit quickly. Stephen Dyson, Product Manager at Proto Labs, explains, why and how outsourcing can support quick delivery capabilities. read...

Machining marks are often visible at transitions between steep and flat areas, or at the extents of rest machining regions. The new ‘soft overlap’ function in Hyper-Mill greatly reduces this effect, Open Mind reports. The milling tool is briefly lifted to blend the milling paths into one another. This prevents visible transitions from being created and results in better surface quality. Additionally, the CAD module in Version 2018.1 of the Open Mind CAM suite features the time-saving solution ‘global fitting.’

Global Fitting creates a single cohesive face from a set of multiple faces, the company notes. Many CAM strategies can then follow the ISO u-v orientation of the surface patch, increasing the application of these CAM strategies.

The Hyper-CAD-S Electrode further automates the construction and manufacturing of electrodes for die-sinking, Open Mind says. Users can derive their electrodes from the face to be die-sunk within the component geometry. According to the company, there is no requirement of specialist expertise.
