In the automotive industry, the company manufactures mould inserts for silicone light guides, the Matrix LED light, in automobile headlamps. This light guide exhibits 90 fine contact pins, whose alignment and dimensions have been exactly calculated down to a few hundredths of a percent. According to the Swabian-based, family-owned company, it offers a level of precision and is able to achieve tolerances of a mere two micrometres in processes, as in the case mentioned above. The basis for this is provided by its high-performance tooling machines and the company's wealth of experience and craftsmanship of its employees. Machining tools and electrodes are manufactured in-house to guarantee the reproducible quality required, Leonhardt claims.

The mould inserts for the Matrix LED light also requires a highly polished surface to enable the light value to be exactly controlled and that no disturbing reflections occur. To achieve this, the company introduced a new dimension of manual polishing, which allowed for the surface roughness to be reduced to an Ra of 0.05 µm uniformly, right down to the last corner of the fine contact pin.

At the Moulding Expo, Leonhardt will be in hall 6, booth B40.
