The automotive industry benefits from Okuma for large moulds and tools. Okuma meets the demanding needs of the automotive industry. The high-performance portal milling machines offer the highest precision for the production of large workpieces in mould and tool making.

In the automotive industry, portal milling machines are used to manufacture large moulds for the production of body parts. The manufacturing process is extremely demanding, as the tools must be very dimensionally stable and require surfaces of the highest quality. These requirements are challenging as the machining process takes several days. The long production time endangers the dimensional accuracy of the workpiece due to temperature fluctuations and other external influences.

Okuma, therefore, offers various solutions for high manufacturing quality. The Thermo-Friendly Concept helps to minimize heat development during machining and compensates for thermal deformations. For the best possible surface quality, the Premium Solution Hyper-Surface automatically corrects the machining data and makes manual reworking obsolete. The solid, cast double column construction of the machine offers high stability and ensures minimum manufacturing tolerances. A probe allows complex geometries to be measured during the manufacturing process. "Automobile manufacturers appreciate the high dimensional accuracy of less than 20 µm even for workpieces up to 2,000 mm wide and 5,000 mm long," says Pablo Liechti, Product Manager.

Okuma portal milling machines have technologies that make them as productive as possible. The Intelligent Technology application Servonavi optimizes cutting and feed speeds. This shortens production cycles by up to 25%. The Thermo-Friendly Concept also contributes to increased productivity by reducing warm-up times. The portal milling machines can be individually adapted to customer requirements. Manufacturers can choose between different spindle designs, a range of attachments and table sizes.
