A partnership has been formed between Module Works and Cetim to integrate Module Works' Self-Driving CAM technology into Cetim's Techni Quote cost estimating software. The technology, which includes integrated toolpath generation, aims to streamline the process of estimating the cost of milling operations.

Techni Quote is a software tool used by machine shops and subcontractors to generate detailed cost breakdowns. It supports decision making for pricing, resource allocation and process optimisation in mechanical manufacturing. Users initiate the estimation process by loading a CAD model and configuring machining scenarios. For milling operations, the Self-Driving CAM integration offers pre-defined machining templates to simplify and speed up the estimation process.

Hervé Lallemand, product manager for costing at Cetim, points out that estimates based on toolpath data tend to be more accurate than those derived from other costing methods. However, the process has traditionally required specialised machining skills and considerable time to input the relevant CAM parameters. The integration aims to reduce this complexity by requiring users to select only a few parameters.

Soroosh Eghbali, head of technology CAM automation at Module Works, notes that the application of Self-Driving CAM to estimating represents a new use case for the technology. He notes that its integration into Techni Quote aims to automate and streamline estimating workflows.

In addition to machining templates, Techni Quote uses automatic feature recognition to help engineers quickly set up and run comparative cost analyses. The technology is based on Module Works toolpath algorithms that provide detailed information on toolpath length and complexity. This data enables Techni Quote to more accurately estimate various cost factors, including total machining time, tool wear, scrap and energy consumption.
