Makino’s T1 machining centre satisfies the different demands of titanium and aluminium machining, which makes the unit suitable for both the aerospace and die and mould manufacturing industries, the company said.

The 1,000-mm pallet-class addition to the company's T series is said to feature material removal rates of 0.000202 m³/min for Ti-6Al-4V titanium and 0.004636 m³/min for A6061 aluminium. According to Makino, it also performs well in machining cast-iron engine cylinder blocks or components for plastic injection moulds.

The machine is said to display good dampening behaviour and is fast and accurate. Moreover, the spindle has been specifically developed for this machine in order to deliver improved performance and flexibility, e.g., constant high power and torque in wider speed ranges than conventional spindles, according to the company.

The B-axis rotary table delivers torque of 29,000Nm (peak), whereas the A-axis tilt is located at the spindle and delivers 21,500Nm (peak), Makino said. It explained that the benefits of the construction principle compared with a trunnion 5-axis machining centre include the fact that heavy parts are not moved on a tilting table and are supported directly by the bed, the overall collision risk is lower, and there are no changes in the spindle-weight moment.

According to the manufacturer, the combination of semi-floating slide guides and roller guides contributes to better rigidity and accuracy and improve machine dynamics and response. In addition, the unit’s accuracy management is also enhanced by Makino's Thermal Stabiliser during machining operations, the company explained.
