In modern injection moulding production, ensuring maximum machine availability to avoid expensive downtimes is crucial. This requires reducing mould set-up and changeover times. Nonnenmann meets these needs with its multi-couplings, which enable quick, error-free connections, thereby minimising the time and risk involved in these operations.

Time is money — this principle also applies to modern injection moulding production. One of the daily challenges faced by users is to ensure maximum possible machine availability and thus avoid unnecessary, expensive downtimes and idle times for injection moulding machines.

To achieve this, it is necessary to keep mould set-up and changeover times as short as possible. When setting up and removing the injection moulds on the machine, the temperature control and the core pull and cascade hydraulics must always be connected or disconnected, among other things. This work step can quickly become time-consuming, especially for larger moulds with a high number of circuits. Furthermore, there is always a certain risk of connections being mixed up during assembly. In the worst-case scenario, a defined temperature control circuit would then be run with the wrong parameters, which in turn could have a negative impact on product quality and lead to expensive scrap costs.

In these situations, the right answer to the requirements of set-up time optimisation and process reliability is the use of multi-couplings — this enables several circuits to be coupled quickly and without confusion in just a few simple steps.

For this purpose, Nonnenmann, as a component supplier for injection moulding companies and mould makers, offers a broad product portfolio of multi-couplings and various matching accessories. The machine- and mould-side couplings are available for the various media water, tempering oil, hydraulics, pneumatics and vacuum. Using a multi-coupling, up to twelve circuits can be coupled with one handle, which corresponds to a total of 24 mono-couplings for flow and return.

Multi-couplings are convincing in practical applications due to two key points — firstly, the high level of process reliability, as the couplings are permanently assigned to the temperature control circuits and can no longer be connected interchangeably during the set-up process. Secondly, the speed, as up to 24 couplings can be connected at once with a single movement. This enables significantly faster set-up times and ensures higher machine utilisation. Customer projects carried out in the past have repeatedly demonstrated short amortisation times.

For more than 20 years, Nonnenmann has relied on the Turkish coupling manufacturer TST (Tamsan).

Users benefit from flexibility thanks to the large selection of different coupling profiles, which are available for European, French and international systems up to a nominal flow diameter of 16 mm. The multi-couplings can be used for mixed installation and are therefore suitable for all common profiles on the market. All standard imperial and metric threads as well as hose nozzles in various versions are available for hose and tool assembly. Depending on the application, the couplings are available as brass, steel or stainless steel versions for maximum requirements up to 300°C and up to 160 bar. Depending on the requirements, the couplings can be designed with or without a valve and optionally with a flat seal. Multi-couplings can also be installed on the injection moulding machine as a bulkhead plate solution combined with mono-couplings, enabling flexible and variable machine/mould configuration.

Many series and sizes of multi-couplings are available in different colours in order to avoid confusion when connecting the temperature control system to moulds with several multi-couplings during the set-up process, as this ensures that the machine-side and mould-side multi-couplings can be clearly assigned. The company offers coloured multi-couplings in blue, yellow, green and red as an alternative to the standard version in black and grey.

At the beginning of the year, the company integrated the multi-couplings and the associated accessory components into its own online shop. This eliminates the need for time-consuming enquiry and quotation processes and saves valuable time during the design phase or in production.

The multi-couplings can be ordered fully equipped or assembled according to customer-specific requirements from plates, coupling inserts, hose connections and colour coding. In addition to ordering in the online shop, registered customers can also generate their own quotation with customised discounts.
