The 28th installment of the Fakuma international trade fair for plastics processing took place from October 17-21, 2023, witnessing a full booking of its exhibition space with a ten percent increase in the number of exhibitors compared to its last occurrence in 2021. The event featured 1636 exhibitors from various parts of the world, covering twelve exhibition halls and additional foyer areas, attracting a significant audience of 39,343 professional visitors.

Fakuma 2023 delivered on its promise of a grand celebration of the plastics industry, showcasing a broad array of innovations across 85,000 square meters. The event highlighted the promising future of plastics, particularly focusing on advancements in degradability and recyclability. Key themes of the fair included digitalization, automation, flexibility, energy efficiency, and sustainability, with a strong emphasis on establishing closed-loop material cycles, enhancing recyclability in product design, and promoting the use of recyclates in high-end applications. The new technologies on display aimed at addressing contemporary challenges associated with resource conservation and achieving net-zero emissions.

The event boasted a strong international presence, with 44% of exhibitors coming from outside Germany. This included 134 companies from Italy, 120 from China, 79 from Switzerland, 70 from Austria, 58 from Turkey, and 55 from France. Exhibitors expressed their satisfaction with the fair, highlighting it as a vital platform for industry networking, idea exchange, and fostering collaborations.

Large injection molding machines were a highlight of the event, captivating attendees with their size and capabilities. The fair showcased systems with all-electric drives, sustainable packaging solutions, recycling compounds, metal substitution solutions, and innovations in process monitoring, data acquisition, and industrial 3D printing. The shift towards renewable raw materials was also a prevalent topic of discussion.

Fakuma 2023 played a pivotal role in promoting a circular economy, emphasizing the need for holistic product design, and enhancing recycling and degradability of plastics. The event made it clear that the industry is actively working towards embracing bio-based raw materials and is gearing up to address the upcoming challenges, looking forward to the next edition in October 2024.
